BIND: Berkeley Internet Name Domain

BIND is an abbreviation of "Berkeley Internet Name Domain".

It is a well-known extensively used domain name system server software. It is an open-source system, which is permitted to download free, provided under the license of Mozilla Public. In 2000, the up-to-date current version of BIND, version 9(BIND 9) is launched. It is responsible as a main authoritative name server for some particular domains and also commonly plays roles as a recursive resolver for the DNS system.

BIND History

• At the beginning of the 1980s, BIND was initially written by four graduates, which are Douglas Terry, Mark Painter, David Riggle and Songnian Zhou I, at the Computer Systems Research Group at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), a division of the DARPA project.
• In the mid-1980s, Paul Vixie, who was working for Digital Equipment Corporation undertaken BIND and launched versions 4.9 and 4.9.1.
• In May 1997, version 8 of BIND was launched by Internet System Consortium (ISC). Paul Vixie is the founder of ISC.
• On 9 October 2000, version 9 of BIND was launched, which is also the up-to-date current version of BIND, developed by Nominum, Inc. under the outsourcing agreement of Internet System Consortium (ISC).
