IB: Intelligence Bureau

IB is an abbreviation of the Intelligence Bureau. It is an internal intelligence agency of India that for the most part operates with internal tasks and intelligence; controls terrorization threats within the country. It makes available for useful information regarding distrustful activities to other agencies of intelligence and police so that these agencies and police can take the required action to look after the country and its people from the internal or external terrorization threats. To counterintelligence and terrorism associated tasks, IB is assigned to gather intelligence inside the country.

IB History

  • In 1887, IB was created to keep monitoring on Russian-troops positioned in Afghanistan. It is the oldest intelligence agency in India.
  • In 1947, it was re-crafted as the Central Intelligence Bureau under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India at the time when India got independence from British rulers.
  • The 1950s onward, the IB was trained by the Soviet KGB till the fall down point of the Soviet Union.
  • Due to brief failure on the part of the Intelligence Bureau to forecast the Sino-Indian War of 1962, and afterward on, intelligence lapse in the India-Pakistan War in 1965, it was divided into two branches in 1968 and handed over with the undertaking of internal intelligence only.

IB Responsibilities

The director of the Intelligence Bureau has always been an Indian Police Service officer. As of June 2019, the current director of the IB is Arvind Kumar, a 1984 batch IPS officer. He is the 27th Director of Intelligence Bureau succeeding Rajiv Jain, a 1980 batch IPS officer.

The way an IB officer leads his life is not trouble-free or simple. It is filled with hazards and lots of sacrifices. IB one famous task is to take away licenses of amateur radio enthusiast's and it can also tap a phone line. It also contains a system of email spying to check emails of terrorist organizations and other malevolent groups.

The Intelligence Bureau also contains a subsidiary section which is known as the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau. At the level of the state, this section operates and is lead by an officer of the rank of Joint Director or above.
