SSLC: Secondary School Leaving Certificate

SSLC is an abbreviation of a Secondary School Leaving Certificate. It is a secondary level leaving certification provided by the school after the student successfully completed the examination at the closing stages of study at the secondary school level in India. The secondary level of schooling is in general known as matriculation examinations or class 10th board examinations in India. The students can acquire the SSLC after securing the qualifying grade in their class 10 board examinations.

In international markets, SSLC is popular which is a general eligibility examination and also in lots of states in India, particularly Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

Classification of SSLC

In India schooling is classified into three groups:

  • Primary Schooling: The first five years of education of a child is known as primary schooling.
  • Secondary Schooling: This schooling is the next five years, from class 6th to class 10th. It is known as secondary schooling.
  • High School or Pre University Course: After primary and secondary schooling completion, this is the last two years of schooling, from class 10th to class 12th. After that, a student can apply for bachelor's degree programs for under graduation in colleges and universities.

Future After Getting SSLC

After getting SSLC, a student can apply for a pre-university course or higher secondary course which is popularly known as +2 educations in India. After successfully completed the class 12th examinations, he/she can apply for any bachelor degree programs for under graduation in any university according to his/her choice or interest.

On the other hand, after acquiring the SSLC, a student may opt or decide to be present at an industrial training institute, where a student can be trained in skills essential for technical professions. The other alternatives comprise joining polytechnic for the duration of a three-year course of diploma in engineering and then in advance pursuing a degree in engineering. After a student completed SSLC, there is a choice of joining vocational education courses. These days for employment purposes, SSLC or its equivalent is necessary to acquire a passport under the Indian government.

Significance of SSLC

When registration of births and deaths was not compulsory in India, the SSLC certificate was used as the main structure of verification for the date of birth. Those people who born before 1989 according to the MEA website, it is still a legitimate form of verification of date of birth for the Indian civil authorities to issue civil documents such as passports.
