What is the full form of UNICEF?

UNICEF is an abbreviation of the United Nations Children's Fund; in earlier times, it was called as United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. It is an exceptional program of the United Nations which works for the universal wellbeing and benefits of the deprived children and mothers all over the world.

UNICEF Brief History

  • On December 11, 1946, it was founded by United Nations General Assembly, for the wellbeing and safety interest of European children after World War ll.
  • In 1950, General Assembly extended its terms of official command so that it can help and facilitate the deprived children and mothers in developing countries.
  • In 1953, UNICEF turned out to be the permanent member of the United Nations General Assembly and its name was shortened to United Nations Children's Fund. On the other hand, the assembly keeps hold of its acronym "UNICEF".

In the present time, UNICEF is operating and functioning in more than 190 countries. It operates and works with local communities, business partners and governments of the countries to offer urgent relief support to deprived and disadvantaged children and mothers.

UNICEF accepts as true that all children have the right to sufficient and satisfactory nutrition, education, health and protection against mistreatment and exploitation.

As a result, its complete attention is on five main problems faced by the children, which are given below:

  • Violence and exploitation
  • Hunger
  • War
  • Disaster
  • Disease

UNICEF National Committees

  • There are national committees in 36 industrialized countries, each established as a self-governing local non-governmental organization. The national committees raise funds from the public sector.
  • UNICEF is funded completely by charitable contributions, and the National Committees communally together raise around one-third of UNICEF's annual revenue. This comes through contributions from corporations, civil society organizations around six million individual donors globally.
