UPA: United Progressive Alliance

The United Progressive Alliance is a coalition of center-left political parties in India. After the 2004 general election, it was created. The chair-person of UPA is Sonia Gandhi, who is also the president of the Indian National Congress (INC), a well-known and most significant and powerful party in UPA.

UPA History

  • UPA was created just after the general election of 2004 when no party had won the complete majority.
  • The previously ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had won 181 seats in the 543-member 14th Lok Sabha, as opposed to the UPA's tally of 218 seats.
  • The UPA government's policies were at the beginning directed by a common minimum programme that the alliance strikes out with successful and rewarding consultations with Jyoti Basu and Harkishan Singh Surjeet of the 59-member Left Front. Therefore, government policies were commonly recognized as center-left, reflecting the centrist policies of the INC.
  • On 22 July 2008, the UPA closely survived a vote of confidence in the parliament brought on by the Left Front moving back their support in protest at the India–United States Civil Nuclear Agreement.
  • The UPA lost major recognition and regard in the 2014 General Elections after many elected representatives of the UPA were accused in a variety of scams and scandals.
