AE: Adobe After Effects

AE is an abbreviation of "Adobe After Effects".

It is a digital visual effect, motion graphics, and compositing video editing application software built up and expanded by Adobe Systems and used in the post-production course of action of film making, video games and television production. Amid other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing, and animation. It also plays a role as a very fundamental non-linear editor, audio editor, and media transcoder.

In 2019, the program won an Academy Award for scientific and technical achievement.

AE History

  • In January 1993, After Effects was initially designed and developed by David Herbstman, David Simons, Daniel Wilk, David M. Cotter, and Russell Belfer at the Company of Science and Art in Providence, Rhode Island, where the first two versions of the software, 1.0 and 1.1, were launched by the company.
  • In July 1993, CoSA alongside with After Effects was then obtained by Aldus Corporation, which was in turn obtained by Adobe in 1994, and with it PageMaker.
    Adobe's foremost original launch of After Effects was version 3.0.
  • On April 2, 2019, Adobe launched version 16.1, whose codename was Clock-o-nut in which the additional major features are Content-Aware Fill for video, customizable Expressions Editor, import/export guidelines, automatic Adobe Font sync, and bug fixes.
  • On January 24, 2020, Adobe launched version 17.0, in which the additional major features are Preview and playback performance improvements, enhanced EXR Workflows, faster shapes, graphics and text enhancements, expression improvements, expanded format and better playback support, new Cineware renderer and Cinema 4D Lite R21, Content-Aware Fill for video improvements.


  • After Effects has wide-ranging plug-in support; an extensive range of third-party plug-ins are obtainable. A variety of plug-in styles be present, such as particle systems for realistic effects for rain, snow, fire, etc.
  • By means or devoid of third-party plug-ins, After Effects can provide 3D effects. A number of these types of 3D plug-ins make use of fundamental 2D layers from After Effects.
  • In addition to 3D effects, there are a variety of plug-ins for making a video similar to or comparable like:
