AF: Autofocus

AF is an abbreviation of "Autofocus".

It is an optical system, which makes use of a sensor, a control system and a motor to put a focus on an automatically or manually chosen spot or region. An electronic rangefinder has a display as an alternative of the motor; the process of adjustment of the optical system has to be carried out manually until indication. Autofocus techniques are well-known by their category as being one of the three given following:

  • Active variants
  • Passive variants
  • Hybrid variants

Autofocus systems depend on one or more sensors to find out the correct focus. Several AF systems depend on a single sensor, at the same time as others use a range of sensors. The majority of current SLR cameras use through-the-lens optical sensors, with a split sensor array offering light metering, even though the latter can be programmed to designate as very important it's metering to a similar spot as one or more of the AF sensors.

  • Optical autofocusing is now frequently speedier and highly accurate than can be accomplished manually with a normal viewfinder through the lens, even though highly accurate manual focus can be accomplished with exceptional accessories such as focusing magnifiers.
  • Autofocus accurateness within 1/3 of the depth of field (DOF) at the widest aperture of the lens is ordinary in professional AF SLR cameras.
  • The majority of multi-sensor AF cameras enable manual selection of the active sensor, and a lot of provides automatic selection of the sensor by using algorithms that attempt to acquaint with the difference in the location of the subject.
  • Several AF cameras can perceive whether the subject is moving towards or away from the camera, comprising speed and acceleration data, and keep the focus on the subject — a function used primarily in sports and other action photography; on Canon cameras, this is known as AI servo, whereas on Nikon cameras it is known as "continuous focus".
  • The data accumulated from AF sensors are used to have management control over an electromechanical system that adjusts the focus of the optical system.
  • A modification of autofocus is an electronic rangefinder, a system in which focus data are made available to the operator, other than the adjustment of the optical system is still carried out manually.
  • The speed of the AF system is extremely dependent on the widest aperture provided by the lens at the present focal length.
