AIM: AOL Instant Messenger

AIM is an abbreviation of "AOL Instant Messenger".

It was an instant messaging, and online chat type technology and presence computer program designed and developed by AOL, which used the proprietary OSCAR instant messaging protocol and the TOC protocol to enable record listed users to make communication in real-time.

  • In North America, AIM was well-accepted from the late 1990s to the late 2000s and was the most significant instant messaging application in that section of the area. In the early 2010s, AIM's fame and recognition turned down precipitously as Internet social networks like Facebook and Twitter achieved acceptance and recognition, and its collapse has frequently been contrasted with further previously well-liked Internet services such as Myspace.
  • In June 2015, AOL was obtained by Verizon Communications.
  • In June 2017, Verizon merged AOL and Yahoo into its subordinate Oath Inc, which is now called as Verizon Media.
  • On December 15, 2017, the company put an end to AIM as a service.

AIM History

  • In May 1997, AOL Instant Messenger was in the beginning incorporated into AOL Desktop and afterward also launched as a stand-alone download by America Online (AOL) for Microsoft Windows.
