What is AirPlay?

By Anushree Goswami Last updated : June 02, 2026

AirPlay

AirPlay is a wireless streaming technology developed by Apple and released in 2004. It allows users to stream audio, video, and other media content wirelessly between compatible Apple devices and supported receivers. Initially, the technology was known as AirTunes, but later Apple renamed it to AirPlay.

As the term "Air" suggests, AirPlay is all about the wireless transmission of media content. It can be used with various Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macs, and Apple TV.

Many people wonder whether it is possible to play music stored on one device through another device without using cables. AirPlay makes this possible by allowing media to be streamed seamlessly across compatible devices. For example, music stored on an iPhone can be played through an AirPlay-enabled speaker or an Apple TV connected to a television.

Features of AirPlay

AirPlay offers several useful features beyond simple audio streaming. It allows users to stream music, videos, photos, presentations, and even mirror the screen of one Apple device onto another compatible device.

If a user wants a better audio experience, AirPlay can stream music from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac directly to wireless speakers, sound systems, or Apple TV. This eliminates the need for physical connections while maintaining high-quality playback.

Using AirPlay for Media Streaming

Although photos, videos, and other applications can also be shared and streamed through AirPlay, it is most commonly used for music and audio streaming purposes.

Users can easily stream media from one device to another using AirPlay. For example, to play a video on a larger screen, open the video in a supported application such as iTunes or Apple TV, and then click or tap the AirPlay icon. A list of available AirPlay-enabled devices will appear. Select the desired device from the list. In some cases, you may be asked to enter a verification code displayed on the receiving device. Once the connection is established, the media will begin playing on the selected device.

Advantages of AirPlay

  • Wireless streaming of audio, video, and photos.
  • Easy sharing of media between Apple devices.
  • High-quality audio and video transmission.
  • Screen mirroring support for presentations and demonstrations.
  • No cables or additional hardware required for compatible devices.
  • Simple and user-friendly setup process.

Summary

AirPlay is Apple's wireless media streaming technology that enables users to stream audio, video, photos, and other content between compatible devices. Originally introduced as AirTunes, AirPlay provides a convenient and cable-free way to enjoy media on larger screens, speakers, and other supported devices.
