ARPA: Advanced Research Projects Agency

ARPA is an abbreviation of "Advanced Research Projects Agency". Currently, it is known as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is an agency or organization of the United States Department of Defense in charge of the expansion and growth of promising technologies for use by the military.

• In February 1958, the agency was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was established in acknowledgment of the Soviet launching of Sputnik 1 in 1957.
• DARPA originates and implements research and development projects to develop the frontiers of technology and science, frequently ahead of instantaneous U.S. military necessities by working in partnership with academic, industry, and government partners.
• DARPA-funded projects have made available considerable technologies that influenced a lot of non-military fields, such as computer networking and the foundation for the modern Internet, and graphical user interfaces in information technology.
• DARPA is self-governing in comparison to other military research and development and accounts straight to senior Department of Defense management. DARPA includes just about 220 government employees in six technical offices, comprising almost 100 program managers, who collectively manage about 250 research and development programs.
• In March 1972, the name of the organization first changed from its founding name ARPA to DARPA, temporarily changing back to ARPA in February 1993, simply to regress to DARPA in March 1996.

DARPA has seven technical offices that administer the agency's research portfolio and also supervise the special projects and transition efforts. All offices accounts to the DARPA director:
