AYUSH: Ayurvedic, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy

AYUSH is an abbreviation of Ayurvedic, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. It alludes to the Department of AYUSH. Formerly, it was called the Department of Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H).

In November 2003, it was given a new name Department of AYUSH with a vision to offer additional prominence on the development of Education and Research in Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. AYUSH was in service under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2003 but as of now in the present day, it comes under the Ministry of AYUSH which was founded on 9 November 2014.

The head office of AYUSH is in New Delhi and the minister of State of AYUSH is Sh. Shripad Yesso Naik, who became its minister from July 2017.

AYUSH Key Objectives

  • Its first objective is to develop and enhance the educational standard of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy colleges across the country.
  • Its second objective is to maintain and build up the research institutions for the research on diseases for which they have an effectual cure and healing.
  • Its third objective is to introduce ideas for the promotion and cultivation of medicinal plants used in these systems of medicine.
  • Its fourth objective is to expand pharmacopeias standards for Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy drugs.
