BER: Bit Error Rate

BER is an abbreviation of the "Bit Error Rate".

It is an error which caused due to change in the number of acknowledged bits of data stream all across a communication channel. These changes in bits occur due to some errors, which are noise signal, the intervention of waves, alteration, or due to bit synchronization errors.

For example: Suppose an order of transmitted bit

    101011101
The order of bits, which is acknowledged by the receiver, are
    111010110

In this example, it is clear to be seen that, the total number of bit errors is 4, which is on the second, sixth, eighth and ninth position of the order of bits, where 0, 1, 0 and 1 is changed with 1, 0, 1 and 0.

The bit error rate is defined as the ratio of the total number of bits and unit time.

The bit error ratio, which is also BER, is defined as the ratio of the total number of altered bits and the total number of transmitted bits in the duration of the study of bit error rate.

In the given example, the total number of bit errors is 4 and the total number of transmitted bit is 9, so, according to the definition of bit error ratio:
Bit error ratio is equal to 4 divides by 9, which is 0.44 or in the percentage is 44%.

Bit error rate test

Bit Error Rate Test abbreviated as BERT is defined as the technique of testing the bit error rate, by using the already set stress patterns for the circuits of digital communication. These stress patterns comprise an order of generated zeros and logical ones, which are all preset by the generator of the test pattern.

Some widespread used patterns of BERT stress are:

  • PRBS
  • QRSS (quasi random signal source)
  • 1:7
  • Alternating 0s and 1s
  • Bridgetap
  • Min/max
  • Multipat
  • All zeroes

The electronic equipment which is used to test the bit error rate by using the Bit error rate test technique is known as Bit error rate tester. This Bit error rate tester comprises pattern generator, error detector, clock signal generator, digital communication analyzer, electrical-optical converter, and optical-electrical converter.
