BOINC: Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing
BOINC is an abbreviation of "Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing".
It is a distributed computing system of a decentralized software-development model, which operates on distributed computing resources provided by volunteers to achieve a certain common objective. In the case of further distributed applications, it turned out to be widespread in a variety of fields such as mathematics, linguistics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, environmental science, and astrophysics, along with others. The main purpose of developing BOINC was to maintain the project SETI@home, and later its purpose projected towards the objectives to provide permission to the researchers to make use of the processing resources in a massive format of a range of personal computers all over the world.
BOINC History
- The idea of developing BOINC was to administer and maintain the project SETI@home. It was designed, in a division or section to withstand against the security breakthrough of the project SETI@home, as SETI@home was one of the original volunteer resource-based distributed computing projects, which was not developed with a better system and management of security.
- At the beginning of 2002, the operation on projects based on BOINC began, and in that process, the foremost version was launched on the 10th of April, 2002.
- In June 2004, the first BOINC-based project Predictor@home was released.
- As of 17th, March 2020, in the process and distribution of volunteer resource-based distributed computing projects, 31 BOINC projects are working.
