CD-DA: Compact Disc Digital Audio

CD-DA is an abbreviation of "Compact Disc Digital Audio".

It is also known as Audio CD, is the established conventional format for audio compact discs. The data format of Compact Disc Digital Audio and all the substantial specifications and standards are stated in the Red Book. In 1980, the Red Book was issued and made available by Philips and Sony, which includes the collection of all the substantial specifications and add significant details about the format of Compact Discs. The format of CD-DA is the same as that which is used in ordinary CD players.

Red Book Formats:

In Red Book, the CD-DA format follows some specific standards which are common in the case of the entire CD formats.

All the frameworks and specifications in the standard of Red Book, which are common to the entire compact discs, comprise,

  • Physical frameworks
  • Optical frameworks
  • Deviations and error rates
  • Modulation systems
  • Error correction facility
  • Digital audio encoding specifications

Format of Audio

  • In CD-DA format, the audio comprises two-channel signed to represent numbers in 16-bit linear PCM, which is sampled at 44,100 Hz.
  • In case for purposes of encoding, audio samples are all signed 16-bit two's complement integer, which contains sample values from −32768 to +32767.
    The frequencies specified by an audio CD can be up to 22.05 kHz, which is the Nyquist frequency sampled at the rate of 44.1 kHz.
  • The format of data of audio is classified into frames, frames classified into twelve samples with six in left and six in right samples, discontinuous, which resulted in a sum of total 192 bits or 24 bytes of data of audio per frame.

  • The major unit section on a CD is called a track.
  • A CD can comprise up to 99 tracks, which comprise a data track for mixed-mode discs.
  • Every track can sequentially have in order up to 100 indexes.
  • The enormous greater section of songs is recorded under index 1, by taking the pre-gap being index 0.
