CDDB: Compact Disc Database

CDDB is an abbreviation of the "Compact Disc Database".

It is a database, which contains information related to audio compact discs and can be tracked through applications or software on the internet. The accessibility of audio compact discs related information is provided by the database only after the client of the database compute and evaluate unique disc ID and its request and then give permission for the access. The information present in the data in the database consists of the artist name, CD title, tracklist, and a number of further information, which the client is capable of displaying after the evaluation of the unique disc ID. History

  • About the end of 1993, CDDB was originated and developed by Ti kan as a local database.
  • The first version of CDDB, version 1.1 launched at the end of February 1994.
    In 2000, the name of CDDB Inc. changed to Gracenote.
  • In March 2001, CDDB (Gracenote) legally prohibited those entire applications, which are legally not licensed but have access to its database.
  • In June 2008, the complete right of possession of CDDB (Gracenote) was taken by Sony Corp. of America.
  • In 2014, the CDDB (Gracenote) was procured by Tribune Media Services (TMS) from Sony.
  • In December 2016, it was resold by Tribune Media Services (TMS) to Nielsen.

Working of CDDB

  • The purpose of the creation of CDDB was to identify the complete compact discs with all the present data and information inside it.
  • In this procedural progression of identification, it originates a mark or impression of a compact disc, which is called as "discid", designed by carrying out several estimations on the track in the period of, when the information of the compact disc gets collected and preserved in the index sections of the compact disc.
  • The use of this mark known as "discid" is generally with the database of the internet in the condition, either in case of the complete compact disk, to download the names of the tracks, or in case of the recently identified compact disc, by submitting the names of tracks.
