CD-ROM XA: CD-ROM Extended Architecture

CD-ROM XA is an abbreviation of "CD-ROM Extended Architecture". It is an extension, a modified version of CD-ROM, which merges compressed audio, video, and system of computer data and enables the accessibility of all the different types of data at the same time. In 1988, it was launched by Philips, Sony, and Microsoft that facilitates making text, audio, and video data operative at the same time more precisely on multimedia discs.

Sector Layouts

In the field of data storage by compact discs, CD-ROM XA classifies two latest sector layouts, which are known as Mode 2 Form 1 and Mode 2 Form 2.

  • XA Mode 2 Form 1:
    1. It is corresponding to the Mode 1 configuration, which uses the first 16 bytes for the information of the header.
    2. Mode 1 includes 288 bytes for every sector in case of error detection and correction, which helps in separating 2,048 bytes for each sector accessible for data.
    3. It can interleave with XA Mode 2 Form 2 sector.
  • XA Mode 2 Form 2:
    1. It is corresponding to the standard Mode 2 although with further error detection bytes.
    2. It has 2,324 bytes of user data.
    3. It can interleave with XA Mode 2 Form 1 sector.
    4. It is used in case of data, which comprises audio, video, or both.
