CLI: Command Line Interface
CLI is an abbreviation of "Command Line Interface". It is a user interface (UI), in which text is used in the command line to examine, organize and control the files of a system of computer and this is the reason, it is also called as command-line user interface and character user interface. The program which is used to manage the interface is called as a command-line interpreter or command-line processor. These programs are commonly simple and effortless in the process of converting and making them operative by mostly automatic equipment with command-line interfaces by the use of scripting.
Types of Command Line Interfaces
Command Line Interfaces is classified into two types:
- Operating system command-line interfaces
- Application command-line interfaces
CLI History
- The gradual development of the command-line interface happened from a type of dialog, which on one occasion carried out by humans over machines of teleprinter (TTY). In that dialog, human operators interchange information from a distance, generally through one line of text at a time.
- In 1964, Louis Pouzin, who is the team employee of MIT Computation Center, originated the RUNCOM device designed in favor of implementing command scripts at the same time as enabling replacement of argument.
- The term "shell" to illustrate the system of method of using commands similar to a programming language is coined by Louis Pouzin.
In 1971, the primary Unix shell, known as the V6 shell, was created and designed by Ken Thompson at Bell Labs.
- In 1977, as a substitution for the V6 shell, the Bourne shell was launched.
- In the period of the 1980s and 1990s, the Graphical User Interface substituted the command-line interface in the form of the primary user interface, when the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows introduced on personal computers.
- As of 2001, a Unix-like operating system is the fundamental basis of the Macintosh operating system macOS, which is called Darwin.
- In the month of November 2006, Windows Power Shell version 1.0 is launched by Microsoft, which merged attributes of conventional Unix shells.
