CPGA: Ceramic Pin Grid Array

CPGA is an abbreviation of "Ceramic Pin Grid Array". It is a pin grid array, which makes use of a ceramic substrate with pins organized in a pin grid array format and is fundamentally based on a category of packaging used by integrated circuits.

The integrated circuit packaging makes use of the size of a square or rectangular through-hole ceramic package, in which pins or leads are organized in a square array at the foundation base of the body of the package. The CPGA is capable of to either encompass a frit-sealed ceramic lid or a solder-sealed metal lid.

An example of CPGA is the Pentium chip of 133 MHz in the format of a ceramic package.

CPGA Use

  • In the case of Athlon and Duron processors, a CPGA was used by AMD, in which both the processors were based on Socket A.
  • It was also used by a number of AMD processors, which are based on Socket AM2 and Socket AM2+.
  • It gets frequently mounted through soldering on a printed circuit board by using the through-hole system of process or gets inserted by putting in into a PGA socket.

Categories of PGA

CPGA is one of the different variety of categories of PGA, the list of other categories, comprises:

  • Staggered pin grid array (SPGA)
  • Stud grid array (SGA)
  • Organic pin grid array (OPGA)
  • Flip-chip pin grid array (FC-PGA or FCPGA)
  • Reduced pin grid array (RPGA)
