CSNET: Computer Science Network

CSNET is an abbreviation of "Computer Science Network (CSNET)". It was a computer network, which was used with the main objective to expand advantages of networking by laying the foundation for the progress and development of NSFNET, in support of departments of computer science at educational and research organizations or universities all over the world.

In 1981, it started the process of functioning in the United States, which could not be straightforwardly associated with the wide-area packet switching based network, ARPANET, because of the restrictions of financial support or approval of agreement. On the course of growth and expansion of the worldwide Internet, it was the most essential high point and taken part in a noteworthy responsibility of spreading awareness with reference to nationwide networking.

CSNET History

  • In 1980, the National Science Foundation introduced the Computer Science Network (CSNET).
  • By 1981, it started the process of functioning in the United States and three educational and research organizations were associated with CSNET, which are University of Delaware, Princeton University, and Purdue University.
  • By 1982, 24 organizations were associated with CSNET.
  • By 1984, it expanded its association to 84 new organizations, which comprised one in Israel. In a little while from then on associations were set up to departments of computer science in some of the countries, which are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Korea, and Japan.
  • In due course, CSNET associated with more than 180 educational and research organizations all over the world.
  • Up until 1989, CSNET managed and functioned independently, but after that it combined with Bitnet to establish the Corporation for Research and Educational Networking (CREN). It was a predecessor of the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNet), which in due course turned out to be a chief support of the Internet.
  • In the month of October 1991, the CSNET network was ceased operational work and closed down.
