DDR3 SDRAM: Double Data Rate 3 Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory

DDR3 SDRAM stands for "Double Data Rate 3 Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory". It consists of a high bandwidth interface, with the powerful functioning ability to transfer the data by two times the rate, which is approximately eight times the speed of its arrays of internal memory and allows higher bandwidth data rates.

The standard of DDR3 SDRAM allows chip capacities of DRAM up to 8 gibibits (Gibit), and also up to four memory ranks of 64 bits (a collection of DRAM chips) with each one meant for an overall utmost of 16 gibibytes (GiB) per DDR3 DIMM.

DDR3 SDRAM History

  • In the second month of 2005, the first sample model of DDR3 memory chip was launched with a memory space of 512 Mb and a bandwidth of 1.066 Gbps by Samsung.
  • In 2007, DDR3 SDRAM was properly launched in public.

DDR3 SDRAM Specification

  • Prefetch buffer: Its size is 8n, which is eight datawords per memory access.
  • DDR3 modules: They are capable of to transfer the data at the rate of 800–2133 MT/s by means of both the rising and falling edges of a clock signal of 400–1066 MHz I/O clock.
  • Electric signaling standards: The electric signaling standards used in DDR3 SDRAM are SSTL_15, Stub Series Terminated Logic, albeit at unusual timings and voltages. In these three standards, DDR3 particularly uses SSTL_15.
  • DDR3 dual-inline memory modules (DIMMs): They contain 240 pins and are electrically unable to get along with DDR2.
