DDS: Digital Data Storage

DDS is an abbreviation of "Digital Data Storage". DDS is a data storage based technology, which fundamentally works on the format the same as Digital audio tape. In this data storage based technology, operational and functioning data gets generated into backup copies as removable storage data. In DDS magnetic tape drives, a method is used for recording, known as helical scan through which high-frequency signals get recorded on magnetic tape drives.

DDS Formats

A number of formats of Digital Data Storage are:

• DDS-1: This format stores the data up to 1.3 GB uncompressed (2.6 GB compressed) on a 60 m cartridge or 2 GB uncompressed (4 GB compressed) on a 90 m cartridge.
• DDS-2: This format stores the data up to 4 GB uncompressed (8 GB compressed) on a 120 m cartridge.
• DDS-3: This format stores the data up to 12 GB uncompressed (24 GB compressed) on a 125 m cartridge.
• DDS-4: This format which is also known as DAT 40, stores the data up to 20 GB uncompressed (40 GB compressed) on a 150 m cartridge.
• DAT 72: This format stores the data up to 36 GB uncompressed (72 GB compressed) on a 170 m cartridge.
• DAT 160: This format stores the data up to 80 GB uncompressed (160 GB compressed) per cartridge.
• DAT 320: This format stores the data up to 160 GB uncompressed per cartridge.
