DVD is an abbreviation of "Digital Video Disc" / "Digital Versatile Disc"

It is generally known as Digital Video Disc. It is a digital optical disc storage format which is widely used to store any type of high capacity digital data like high-quality videos and movies. It is also used to store the operating system. DVDs offer higher storage capacity than CDs (compact disc) and can be played in various kinds of players like DVD players.

A DVD comes in two dimensions which are:

  • 12 cm (120 mm): It is the most common size and normally used for storing software, movies, and operating system etc.
  • 8 cm (80 mm): This size of DVDs is normally used for small devices like portable music player and video camera etc.

Brief History

  • In 1963, Optical recording technology was invented by David Paul Gregg and James Russell and first patented in 1968.
  • In 1987, CD Video was launched which used analog video encoding on optical discs matching the conventional standard 120 mm (4.7 in) size of audio CDs.
  • In 1993, Video CD (VCD) turned out to be one of the first formats for distributing digitally encoded films in this format.
  • In a similar year 1993, two new optical disc storage formats were being developed. One was the Multimedia Compact Disc (MMCD), supported by Philips and Sony which are developers of the CD and CD-i, and the other was the Super Density (SD) disc, supported by Toshiba, Time Warner, Matsushita Electric, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Pioneer, Thomson, and JVC.
  • In January 1995, MMCD nomenclature had been put down before the moment of the press launches for both formats and Philips and Sony were alluding to their format as Digital Video Disc (DVD).
  • On 25 March 1996, Twister was the first movie put on DVD.

DVD Types

A DVD can be classified on the basis of applications in different ways which are given below:

  • DVD-ROM: It can only be used for reading and cannot be written.
  • DVD-R: It can be used to record any type of data.
  • DVD-RW: It can be read, written, erased and rewritten.
