HDMI: High Definition Multimedia Interface

HDMI is an abbreviation of High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is relating to an ownership digital audio-video interface which in the uncompressed format sends signals, e.g. uncompressed data of video and compressed or uncompressed digital data from a HDMI-compliant source device to a monitor of computer, video projector, digital television etc. It is the substitution of digital for video of analog and audio levels of quality which were extensively used for many decades in the past. In late 2003, the manufacturing of consumer HDMI started. Since then, various versions of HDMI have been designed, created and launched; all takes place with cable and connector.

Types of HDMI Cable

  1. Standard Cable: It is also known as Category 1 HDMI cable. It operates at pixel speeds of 75 MHz supporting bandwidth of around 2.23 GBps. It is appropriate for sending an uncompressed 1080i signal.
  2. High Speed Cable: It is also known as Category 2 HDMI cable. It operates at pixel speeds of 340 MHz supporting bandwidth of around 10.2 GBps. It is appropriate for the latest 1440p and WQXGA resolutions.

Advantages

  • A user doesn't require distinct audio cables as it supports both the video and audio signals.
  • It enables a user to set up numerous connections using few cables that make easier the connection process and completely remove the disarrangement of various cables.
  • It enables a user to turn his TV into a computer monitor as most recent computers and laptops come with HDMI connection.
  • By using a significant adapter that provides additional connection choices, it can change the form into DVI.
  • It favors numerous audio formats such as standard stereo, multi-channel surround sound etc.
  • It has the potential to carry high definition video formats (720p, 1080i etc.). It can also carry enhanced definition formats such as 480p, as well as high quality definition formats like PAL or NTSC.

Disadvantages

  • Distance of about 35 meters is carried by HDMI category-1 whereas distance of about 10 meters is carried by HDMI category-2.
  • Delay of authentication sometimes can lead the way towards blank screens.
  • As in comparison with analog cables, HDMI cables are very costly.
  • It is strenuous to operate multiple applications which are expanded over multiple places at the same time.
  • It needs distinct audio cable, in a sequence to use for DVI interfacing. There is also a requirement of HDMI-DVI adapter.
