ISRO: Indian Space Research Organization

ISRO is an abbreviation of the Indian Space Research Organization. It is one of the major space agencies in the world. Its head office is situated in the city of Bengaluru. It builds up and develops application-specific satellite products and tools for the country such as broadcast, communication, weather forecasts, geographic information systems, telemedicine, distance education satellites, etc. As of 15, January 2018, Shri K. Sivan is the Chairman of ISRO.


To harness space technology for national development while pursuing planetary exploration and space science research.


  • In 1962, the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) was founded in the incumbency of Jawaharlal Nehru under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
  • In 1969, INCOSPAR grew and became ISRO. ISRO works under the Department of Space of the Government of India. The authority of the Space Commission controls the Department of Space. ISRO is involved in building and developing the application of Space Science and Space Technology and works for the welfare of nations.
  • Dr. Vikram Sarabhai is known as the father of India's Space Program.

Objective of ISRO

The most significant objective of ISRO is to build and develop space technology and make it relevant and applicable to a variety of nation works.

Organization Structure and Facilities

The Department of Space (DoS) of the Government of India manages and controls the ISRO. The authority of the Space Commission controls the Department of Space.
