RPM: Revolutions Per Minute

RPM is an abbreviation of Revolutions Per Minute. It is a measure of the frequency of rotation, the number of turns or revolutions per minute taken by an object. It put in the picture how many times an involuntary element revolves around its axis in one minute. Therefore, RPM is the rotational speed or frequency of rotation of an involuntary element around a fixed axis such as the crankshaft of an engine, power generator turbine, CD or DVD player and turbocharger.

Examples of RPM

  • The rotational speed of modern air turbine dental drills reach up to 800,000 rpm (13.3 kHz).
  • The rotational speed of a second-hand conventional analog clock is 1 rpm.
  • Generally, DVD players also read discs at an invariable linear rate. The disc's frequency of rotation varies from 25.5 Hz (1530 rpm) when analyzing at the inmost periphery, to 10.5 Hz (630 rpm) at the external periphery.
  • The rotational speed of a washing machine's drum may vary from 500 to 2,000 rpm (8–33 Hz) for the duration of the spin cycles.
  • The rotational speed of a power generation turbine with a two-pole alternator is around 3000 rpm (50 Hz) or 3600 rpm (60 Hz), depending on the country.
  • In the dashboard of a car, the tachometer illustrates the frequency of rotation or rotational speed of the engine. It operates by measuring how many times the crankshaft of an engine revolves around its fixed axis in one minute. Commonly, a tachometer operates by measuring RPM in thousands so if its needle is at 2 it implies that the engine is at 2000 rpm and its crankshaft is revolving 2000 times in one minute.
  • Usually, the rotational speed of a piston aircraft engine varies at a rate between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm (30–50 Hz).
  • The rotational speed of the Zippe-type centrifuge for enriching uranium is at 90,000 rpm (1,500 Hz) or faster.
  • The rotational speed of Gas turbine engines is at tens of thousands of rpm. JetCat model aircraft turbines are competent of over 100,000 rpm (1,700 Hz) with the best attainment of 165,000 rpm (2,750 Hz).
  • A usual 80 mm, 30 CFM computer fan will rotate at 2,600–3,000 rpm on 12 V DC power.
  • The rotational speed of a millisecond pulsar can reach around 50,000 RPM.
  • The rotational speed of a turbocharger can reach up to 290,000 rpm (4.8 kHz), at the same time as 80,000–200,000 rpm (1–3 kHz) is general.
