SLR: Single Lens Reflex

SLR is an abbreviation of Single Lens Reflex. It is used in high standard cameras. SLR makes use of an automatic moving mirror arrangement that makes it possible for photographers to perceive precisely the same, captured by the film or digital imaging system. Mirror and prism system is used by single-lens reflex to perceive precisely what will be captured.

It is generally called the DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera.

Two optical light paths are contained by all the cameras with viewfinders before the development of SLR, which are,

  1. To the film through the lens, and
  2. Located above, which is TLR or twin-lens reflex or to the side, which is rangefinder.

The viewing lens is expected to traverse with the film lens at a fixed point someplace in front of the camera because the viewfinder and the film lens cannot share a similar optical path. The majority of SLR cameras allow upright and laterally correct viewing by the utilization of a roof Pentaprism positioned in the optical path between the reflex mirror and viewfinder.

Till the 1990s, SLR was the most highly developed photographic preview system existing, but the current development and enhancement of digital imaging technology with an on-camera live LCD preview screen has overshadowed recognition of SLR's.

The Italian Rectaflex A.1000 is the first commercially created SLR that engaged a roof Pentaprism.

In 1952, Asahi created the Asahiflex and in 1954, the Asahiflex IIB. In 1957, the Asahi Pentax joint the fixed Pentaprism and the right-hand thumb wind lever. In 1959, Nikon, Canon, and Yashica launched their first SLRs.

The key benefit of SLR cameras in comparison to other cameras is that the lenses can be changed to get the preferred images.

  • The image stabilizing function is effective.
  • The zoom capturing function is longer.
  • The sensor size is large.
  • Flash intensity control.
  • Control of photography is significant.
  • Print quality is effective.
  • Underwater photography is satisfactory.


The key drawback of SLR cameras in comparison to other cameras is that it is heavier and costlier. It costs nearly higher than the point-and-shoot camera.

  • The photo quality is not good.
  • The viewfinder is either exceptionally minute or in a few cases not even present.
  • It has diminutive controls.
  • It has a touch screen, which wouldn’t be as stable during the capturing of an image.
  • Its flexibility is constrained.
