CISF: Central Industrial Security Force

CISF is an abbreviation of the Central Industrial Security Force. It is a Central Armed Police Force in India which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs of the government of India. It is the major industrial security force in the world. It has 132 battalions which comprise the current active strength of 148,371 personnel. In April 2017, the government elevated the authorized and approved strength from 145,000 to 180,000 personnel. The duties of CISF personnel are guarding susceptible governmental buildings, the Delhi Metro, and offering airport security. Its head office is situated in New Delhi, India. The current Director-General of CISF is Rajesh Ranjan who is a 1984 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Bihar cadre. The former Director-General of CISF was Sh. O.P Singh who is a 1983 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre.

On 10 March 1969, CISF was established with the strength of 2,800 under an Act of the Parliament of India. The main objective of CISF is to make available security to industrial divisions like atomic power plants, space installations, mines, oil fields and refineries, major ports, heavy engineering, steel plants, barrages, fertilizer units, airports and hydroelectric/thermal power plants owned, organized and controlled by Central Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), currency note presses producing Indian currency and critical installations all over India straddling various terrain and climatic situations. The CISF offers security cover to 300 industrial division units, government infrastructure projects and amenities and establishments situated all over India.

CISF also makes available consultancy services to a variety of private and governmental organizations. Its consultancy department has many well-known prominent clients such as TISCO, Orissa Mining Co., IB Thermal Power Plant, and NBRI.

CISF primarily has three branches,

  • Executive branch
  • Fire Service branch
  • Ministerial branch

It is additionally structured into six sectors. Each sector is lead by the Sector Inspector General.
