USB: Universal Serial Bus

USB is an abbreviation of Universal Serial Bus. When we talk about how to connect the computers with electronic devices we have, these buses are very useful. They are used for the connection, communication purpose or the power supply and as per the industry norms they are defined as the connectors or cables or the communication protocols.

To fulfill the purpose of data transfer and for the electric power supply between various peripheral devices e.g., printer, keyboard, mice, digital cameras, scanners, external hard drives and flash drives, media devices, etc., Universal Serial Bus is fruitful and decreases the workload. It decreases power consumption as well and best to use for data storage purposes.

History

In 1994, seven companies together namely Compaq, Nortel, Microsoft, Intel, DEC, NEC, and IBM in a group developed USB. To ease the process and comfort the user to make the connection of external devices with PC, USB was developed. Windows, Mac, etc. use a USB device and found it as a very useful component.

How to connect USB device with computer?

To make the connection between USB and computers, you just need to insert the USB device into the computer’s USB port. After you insert the device, it will automatically detect the device and further work on it. Rebooting of the computer is not required after the insertion of the USB device into the computer. Most commonly, Universal Serial Bus Drive is used as a USB device.

  • It can be of Mini size
  • It can be of Standard size

Advantages of USB

  • USB is cheap.
  • USB has a connector system that is robust in nature.
  • USB has a true plug and play nature.
  • USB power consumption is low as well.
  • At the same time, up to 127 USB peripherals can be connected to one PC.
  • When it comes to ease of use, Universal Serial Bus is very useful to fulfill that purpose.
  • USB can be of various size and its connector types also come in a variety.
  • Every device that does contain the USB port fits with USB.

Disadvantages of USB

  • As compared to other systems, the data transfer is not much fast.
  • Between the peripheral and host, single messages can only be communicated and Universal Serial Bus does not provide the feature of broadcasting.
  • The performance and capability of USB are in limit quantity.
